Aching Jaw?

Aching Jaw In Maple Grove?

The technical name for the human jaw is a real mouthful: the temporomandibular joint, more easily referred to as the TMJ. A lot of different things can result in jaw pain. At Arbor Lakes Dental in Maple Grove we treat jaw pain, in particular a painful condition known as TMD.

Your jaw is a complex joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. It is unique in that it lets you move your jaw from side to side, front to back, and open and closed. Disorders in this joint can cause pain in the joint itself, or in the muscles that let you move it.

Finding the exact cause of jaw pain can be difficult. It may be caused by sinusitis, the inflammation of the tissues that line your sinuses. When these tissues are inflamed, the sinuses exert pressure on surrounding areas. If the inflamed sinus is near the jaw, pain in the jaw joint may result. This commonly happens with a cold or allergies.

Apart from sinusitis, there are three common TMJ disorders:

  • Muscle complications. The muscles that move the jaw do a lot of work. Excessive chewing and talking, opening the jaw too wide, or clenching and grinding the teeth can all lead to pain.
  • Joint and disc displacement. These result from trauma to the joint or its disc, which is soft cartilage that acts as a kind of shock absorber.
  • Arthritis. Arthritis, unfortunately, can affect any of your joints. Arthritis in the jaw is usually caused by a missing or deformed disc.

At Arbor Lakes Dental in Maple Grove, jaw evaluations are part of any routine dental exam. If we find any problems we can recommend a course of TMJ treatment. Other services include family dentistry. If you’re experiencing jaw pain or another dental issue, please schedule an appointment with us today.

Aching Jaw In Maple Grove?

TMJ Maple Grove

Hi. I’m Dr. Jamie Sledd, and today in the Maple Grove cosmetic dentistry blog, I want to look at some of the conditions that may result in jaw pain.

Jaw pain may be caused by sinusitis. Sinusitis is the inflammation of the tissues that line your sinuses, and when these tissues are inflamed, the sinuses exert pressure on surrounding areas. If the inflamed sinus is near the jaw, pain in the jaw joint may result. This commonly happens following a cold or when someone suffers from allergies.

Many of my Maple Grove patients who come to me with jaw pain have some type of dental problem, such as an infection or a problem in the temporomandibular joint (also known as TMJ).

The source of jaw pain can easily be identified at your Maple Grove family dentistry office, and treatment can begin from there. But remember, jaw pain shouldn’t be ignored.

Is Malocclusion Causing Your Headache?

TMJ Treatment Maple Grove Are you a Maple Grove adult who suffers with chronic headaches? Have you tried Imitrex, diet adjustments, and chiropractic treatment? Perhaps the cause is not stress-induced tension, spine alignment or eyestrain. Maybe the culprit is right under your nose.

Bite misalignment or malocclusion is a common Maple Grove problem that often goes undetected. Nature intended the front teeth to fit slightly forward from the lower teeth. With a perfect bite, the molars fit together like precision gears.

Malocclusion can cause headaches, tooth loosening, tooth fracture, and in extreme cases, difficulty chewing, speaking or breathing.

Maple Grove braces are an effective solution for most bite problems. Braces not only move teeth, they can also correct the position and function of the joints, muscles and bones in the jaw. In cases of extreme malocclusion, jaw surgery in Maple Grove may be necessary.

Not all Maple Grove family dentists treat bite problems. At Arbor Lakes Dental we treat all types of malocclusion including overbite, underbite and crossbite. For a TMJ treatment consultation, call us at (763)494-4443.

Arbor Lakes Dental offers technologically-advanced cosmetic and restorative dentistry in a friendly environment. We offer smile whitening, veneers, tooth-colored fillings and dental implants. To learn more about our dental philosophy and available procedures, see

Treating Bite Problems In Minneapolis

Treating Bite Problems in Flower Mound Malocclusions (bite problems) include overbites, underbites and crossbites. Jaw alignment disorders restrict proper chewing, talking, and swallowing. They can also cause teeth to shift around in the mouth. Minneapolis family dentistry patients with bite problems are at a greater risk for tooth decay and gum disease because bite misalignment often makes it difficult to maintain proper oral hygiene.

When the lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw, it is called an overbite. When the situation is reversed, it is called an underbite. Crossbite occurs when lower teeth are in the wrong position.

Bite problems can cause headaches and TMJ pain. Some Minneapolis cosmetic dental patients with severe bite problems develop a distorted facial shape and damaged teeth.

If you suspect your toddler or older child has a bite problem, it is important to see your Minneapolis family dentist as soon as possible. Bite issues and their various related problems get worse over time.
